Sinclair Will Preempt Jimmy Kimmel's Show When It Returns to ABC (deadline.com)

Not giving viewers what they want is an interesting new business model for a broadcaster.

This isn’t a surprise given that ABC’s decision to pause the show was made desperately after various station owners made the choice independently. Now ABC is reversing their pause but the stations still control their own programming.

Who even watches broadcast TV (vs internet clips) any more besides boomers? It's been sort of funny watching all the micro-influencers who habitually kick the corpse of legacy media for easy clicks suddenly getting very worked up about Nielsen ratings

I don’t care for the rest of Jimmy’s show with the celebrities and the interviews. I don’t give an f about famously rich folks and their lives but I find jimmy hilarious and his monologue funny. So I watch the clip of that when it hits YouTube. He’s got 20m YouTube subs for the show. I bet the monologue I watch gets more views than the TV show and by extension also has a more favorable demographic for advertisers on Youtube than the TV show on ABC.

Very few watch it - big influencers on social media have far larger audiences. In fact I think that’s also why the show being taken off air was polarizing. A lot of people watching clips of Kimmel during this controversy didn’t see the part left out of most clips shown in news articles, where Kimmel painted people mourning Kirk as toddlers mourning a goldfish or something like that. I think that would be offensive / insensitive to a lot more people than are currently offended.

Kimmel's monologues seem to regularly get 1-2m views and he has ~20m subscribers. I looked at a few right-leaning political podcasters (Asmongold, Ben Shapiro, Matt Walsh) who regularly get around a million views though having lower subscriber numbers. No doubt there are more detailed viewership ratings on digital media available, but I don't feel like going to the effort of collecting them.

Kimmel compared Trump's apparent indifference to the death of Kirk (in favor of talking about progress on the construction of his ballroom) to a 4 year old mourning his goldfish. It was very specific rather than joking at the expense of Kirk fans in general. It's odd that in complaining about context being omitted you would yourself omit such key context; to help refresh your memory, here's the original clip, with the 'offending' remark about 2 minutes in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-j3YdxNSzTk
