I remember trying to run some old version of Nero, the CD-ROM burning tool, on a recent-ish version of Windows, and it popped up a message about known incompatibilities.

They certainly do. If you want to SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition on Windows 7 you get that message - you have to get R2.
