I don't know why people even bother with this kind of question. Companies will straight up lie to you even if you know they're doing it and just brazen it out if you call them on it.
Maybe the article indeed didn't drive the change (and I could believe it, it's probably not a major cost to have that one guy doing it), or maybe it did, or maybe they're weaseling out because it wasn't that exact article. But, the time when I would believe a single word of something like this is firmly in the past.
Serious inquiry stopped when revoking access became the standard response to asking hard questions. When such tactics make it impossible to do your job, you stop using those tactics.
This is why you need to think before your disclose. If you know a cool trick, instead of telling everyone, consider the possibility that people rely on said trick and to disclose it would spoil it for them.
