There is no way to measure the 'progress' between different types of systems. The manufacturing process is exponentially faster and more efficient between 1980 and 2020.
As far as cars go, I would say a 1980 mechanic could work on a 1940 car. A 1980 mechanic could NOT work on a 2020 car.
