I studied "Computer Graphics" as an elective subject for my Electrical Engineering degree. It was taught by one of the the maths lecturers I think. (Peter Castle at University of Wollongong, maybe 1984). I do remember him playing I guess a VHS of some scenes of what was state of the art, Star Trek Wrath of Khan, I think). Any way it certainly got me interested in ray tracing and DKBtrace and PoVray later.
