How does this compare to using AWS Systems Manager Session Manager (except a more straight forward naming convention)?

Session Manager is for logging into your instances, this provides an ephemeral "instance." You could (and many places do) accomplish the same thing by having an instance that provides similar functionality, but this removes the need to manage that.
