Humans desire to be a part of a community. For the last several decades, that community (in the US) has been in large part the workplace.

Is anything replacing the workplace as the form of community for people or is that something that is just being lost?

The workplace stopped hosting healthy communities decades ago. Forcing people into being there all day is just making sure no other community appears to fill this need.

I'm sure you're well aware that this depends on the workplace.

Not really. At least, not to any sizeable amount. It depends more on the country, but if a decade on the same job is a long time on your region, then no workplace will have a healthy community.

Coworking offices are great. Go whenever you want, interact with people who are not your coworkers, attend industry events.

I work remote. You are still part of a community. I travel to the main office on occasion and visit with co-workers, go out to dinner, and catch up.

If you are looking for social interaction while remote you can also find like-minded individuals at tech meetups, coworking spaces, even your local Starbucks.

I don't work remotely, but I supplement my work community with community from gym, rock climbing, borrowing a friend's ATV, occasional tech meet up, etc.

Maybe people will go back to Church!

Let's hope not.
