Is there such a thing as the universally acknowledged definition of "car safety"? When you start combining the word "statistically" and "safe", I feel that the statement loses its scientific rigor. To me "safe" is a very vague term and it's mostly used in a subjective context. It makes me wonder if their assumption was really valid when they were testing this feature.

you might try the "deaths per passenger mile" metric, or "deaths per million passenger-miles".

On that metric, long-distance air travel is very safe, as one trip transports hundreds of people a very long way, and motorcycles are at the other end of the scale.
