Awesome course and I encourage everyone to check out the previous iteration (and the corresponding discussions on HN)

Here's another previous post: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25624456 which includes an answer of mine. To add to that list:

[1] "Andermatt - Global Village" - tracks the construction of a luxury resort in the Swiss village of Andermatt and how it affects people there. The village and the project still make the news occasionally. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0NjZjWpXyw

[2] "The Forgotten Space" - essayist movie by Allan Sekula, featured at documenta14. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rY0ZSlhoKiY

[3] "Cold Case Hammarskjöld" by Danish film maker Mads Brugger about the death of former UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjöld; absolutely wild ride. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_Case_Hammarskj%C3%B6ld

How do you like it?

I'm 3/4 through it.

It's been quite entertaining to read how he went from picking off bucket shops to going bust on Wall Street and how he proceeded from there. Old-fashioned writing that goes straight to the point.

His art-like approach to speculation is refreshing after spending time on /r/quant. I cannot say if any of his high-level speculation wisdom hold water anymore, though.

Would recommend!

Who are the organizations fighting chat control which one could support with a donation?

Kind of answering my own question, but in Germany there seem to be:

https://freiheitsrechte.org/

https://chat-kontrolle.eu/

Can anyone comment on the reputability of these initiatives?

Pick any decentralized IM project

You cannot fight this with technology. What will you do when they make connecting to instant messager servers without scanning illegal? VPN? They are already going after VPNs.

"VPN services may soon become a new target of EU lawmakers after being deemed a "key challenge""

https://www.techradar.com/vpn/vpn-privacy-security/vpn-servi...

You don't need to ask anyone to connect to a decentralized IM. This all the way till encryption is banned for personal use.

German heiress Marlene Engelhorn [1] faced the same question when trying to give away her comparably small inheritance of 25 million euros. She resolved to assembling a committee of volunteers who decided how to distribute the money.

As a German speaker, it doesn’t make much sense either

It certainly seems as if they are more focused on rent-seeking than on innovation nowadays (cf. the Epic Games lawsuit vs. Apple Intelligence). On top of that, the WWDC has shifted to adress the public rather than the actual technical audience that attends the conference. Previously, WWDC keynotes were a bit closer to what is now the Platforms State of the Union presentation.

- When in doubt, save money / do the cheaper thing (mostly for consumption, vacation planning)

- Say yes (for activities with friends / colleagues; cf. "The Yes Man" with Jim Carrey)

When in doubt save money. I have a friend who does the opposite. My friend of misery always regrets it and never learns

And if you say no, make plans for next time. As a Gen Z I’ve noticed a lot of people my age will always decline, never take initiative in making plans, then wonder why nobody hangs out with them.

I’ve started using what I call the ‘two strikes rule.’ If I make two attempts to invite someone out and they’re declined without reciprocative energy, I give up on maintaining the relationship. Same with conversations. I’m tired of dealing with social vampires.
