OT, but would really appreciate if you guys offered Passkeys and regular passwords, the whole "check your email" thing is really annoying.

False premise. It’s still underway. I think one of the big differences is that it’s more dependent on “3rd party” apps than a corporate social network, and a lot of that development is ongoing. The biggest improvement to my Mastodon experience was when Tapbots (of Tweetbot fame) released Ivory for macOS/iOS/iPadOS, which still has some rough edges, but it’s far more useable and enjoyable than the “official” client. Over time they’ll improve the UX to make it more accessible for less technical users, and I believe even better since their efforts won’t be subject to the whims of someone else’s interests. At the end of the day it’s not much more complicated than email, and as it goes mainstream it won’t be harder to use than any of the email services at all use.

And yet they’re able to somehow send out bills for these incalculable fees?

They're not incalculable, but:

(1) They vary from municipality to municipality

(2) Customers don't make purchasing decisions exclusively in their own municipality

(3) They aren't Comcast's fees to begin with.

So what's preventing them from just providing a price calculator where you can enter your ZIP code and get an itemized invoice? Don't forget to include the taxes, of course.

ZIP codes are not coterminous with municipalities.

Then just enter your full address, I don't care. Whatever they are already using to calculate your bills.

Reddit’s problem, assuming they actually want the site to continue to be a functional forum (and I think this is a big assumption, I think they view it as a huge LLM training set to sell now) is that they’ve depended on volunteer moderation. If the free moderators leave, they’ll either need to pay moderators (very expensive, would likely put them further in the red) or they watch the content go down the toilet, which is also bad for their IPO dreams. Having taken a blowtorch to moderator/power users’ trust, I think they’re in an inevitable death spiral at this point, it’s just a question of how fast.

Seems like some of the OEs they mention the article are a contributing factor, but it also seems very likely that people who were aware of their higher IQ are more likely to go to doctors and psychologist, and therefore more likely that any other conditions are also caught. A population with a disproportionate level of observations will yield more results.
